What Is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a non-invasive procedure for obtaining hair for transplantation. Trained technicians, under the direct supervision of the physician, obtain these ‘healthy’ hairs from the sides and back of your head. It involves making a small, round incision on the scalp that surrounds the follicular unit and isolates it from the tissue around it. The follicular unit, normally in a cluster of 1-4 hairs, is then extracted from the scalp and the process is repeated multiple times until the desired number of grafts is obtained. Once the follicular unit grafts are extracted from the donor area, the recipient (balding) sites are prepared with a special instrument. The follicular units are then carefully planted into these tiny sites. Once in their new place on the scalp, the follicular units will continue to grow into follicles that produce healthy hair. This method of extracting individual follicular units is what differentiates FUE from Follicular Unit

Transplantation (FUT), also known as the strip method.

FUT is a process in which the units are taken out in a single strip to be later dissected, leaving behind a long, permanent scar. Many potential patients shy away from the strip method because of the slow recovery time, the linear scar on the back of the head and the amount of post-operative pain involved. Our trained technicians optimize your comfort throug-hout the procedure via the FUE method.

  • Who Are The Ideal Candidates For Hair Restoration?

Hair restoration can certainly enhance your appearance and boost your self-confidence. However, before you decide to have the procedure, assess your expectations and discuss them with our physician during your complimentary consultation. The goal of hair restoration is to find the most efficient use of your existing hair. Candidates will be carefully assessed by our trained consultants and will educate you on what method of treatment would be most beneficial. In determining your candidacy, we consider the following:

    •     Number of grafts required to meet your expectations
    •     Density of donor hair
    •     Color of hair
    •     Ethnicity
    •     Texture of hair
    •     Hair loss projections
  • What Is A Protein Rich Plasma Treatment?

Protein Rich Plasma is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets, which are then activated to release multiple growth factors that promote healing. PRP is used to treat hair loss, improve graft take after hair transplantation and to improve wound healing. Treatments with PRP have shown to wake up dormant hair follicles in hair loss patients, resulting in hair growth and hair loss cessation. The treatment consists of drawing blood from the patient’s arm, processing the blood in a centrifuge to obtain the protein rich plasma and then injecting into the scalp’s area of hair loss. The process can be repeated every 4-6 months. PRP is also used to improve wound healing in the scar area of the hair transplant procedure. The use of protein rich plasma in the occipital scar, or FUE donor site, will help expedite the wound healing process so that you can return to your normal activities quicker. PRP is used on the donor sites to promote wound healing and adherence of the new grafts to the scalp donor site.

  • What Happens Before And After The Hair Transplant Procedure?

HLCC will provide you with the highest quality of medical care. After receiving your consultation, determining hair transplantation is the right method of treatment for your hair loss and confirming your procedure date, we will provide you with a pre-op checklist. The pre-op checklist is to be implemented 1-2 weeks prior to your appointment date and will optimize your results. A key component of a successful hair transplant procedure is the post-op care. You will receive thorough post-operative instructions to ensure you get the best results from your procedure. This will include medications, such as a mild steroid (anti-swelling), a painkiller and an antibiotic (anti-infection). Although FUE is a minimally invasive procedure, you can still expect to see some redness at both the recipient and donor sites. This will disappear in a couple of days, depending on the individual’s skin tone and healing process. There is normally minimal to no pain after the procedure. You should avoid touching your recipient sites and minimize sweating, so intense activities are not recommended. Following the proper post-op care will optimize your results and minimize the healing process, such is the case with PRP Treatment.

  • What Is The Associated Cost?
